Decks, steps & outdoor timber, Brisbane

Deck & outdoor timber staining

Small decks, steps, handrails and pergola timber cleaned, prepared and coated — protecting the timber rather than just changing its colour.

Verandah floorboards repainted in a smooth even finish

Brisbane is hard on outdoor timber. Intense UV breaks coatings down from above while humidity and summer storms work on them from below, and a deck that was coated three summers ago is often grey and thirsty by now.

This is coating and protection work — cleaning, sanding where needed, and applying a stain or decking oil. It does not extend to structural repair, replacing boards or re-levelling a deck.

What is covered

  • Small timber decks and verandah boards
  • Steps and treads
  • Handrails and balustrades
  • Pergola and patio timber
  • Exterior timber features and screens
  • Re-coating previously stained or oiled timber

How a deck coat is done properly

  1. Clean and strip back

Grey, weathered surface fibre has to come off or the new coat sits on a layer that is already letting go.

  2. Sand where it is needed

Rough or splintering boards get sanded — both for the finish and because a deck is walked on barefoot.

  3. Wait for dry timber

Moisture in the boards is the most common cause of a coating failing early. Timing the job around the weather matters more here than on almost any other job.

  4. Coat thinly, twice

Stains and oils are meant to soak in. Flooding them on leaves a surface film that peels instead of weathering evenly.

Common questions

Common questions

How often does a Brisbane deck need re-coating?
Typically every one to three years depending on sun exposure and traffic. A covered verandah lasts considerably longer than an exposed deck facing west.
Can you paint a deck instead of staining it?
Boards can be painted with a deck-specific product, but painted decks show wear at traffic points and are much harder to refresh later. For most decks, stain or oil is the better long-term choice.
Do you repair loose or rotten boards?
No. This is coating work. If Tony finds rot or a structural problem while preparing the deck, he will point it out so you can get the right trade in first.
