Timber fences & gates, Brisbane

Fence & gate painting

Timber fences and gates prepared, primed and coated so the finish holds up to Brisbane weather — rather than covering the surface and failing with the old paint underneath.

Fences are the job people most often try themselves and most often regret. It looks like straightforward work, and it is — right up until the new coat starts lifting because it went on over paint that was already letting go.

Whether a fence gets painted or stained, the outcome is decided before any coating is opened: how much of the old finish came off, and how dry the timber was on the day.

What is covered

  • Timber paling and picket fences
  • Gates, including rehanging-free touch-ups around hardware
  • Fence posts and rails
  • Painting, or staining where you want the grain to show
  • One side or both, depending on what you need and what the neighbour agrees to
  • Small sections and repairs rather than only full runs

Why prep decides the result

  1. Clean it down

Brisbane fences collect mould and grime on the shaded side. Coating over that gives the new paint nothing to grip.

  2. Remove what is failing

Loose and flaking material comes off back to a sound edge. New paint over failing paint fails with it, usually within a season.

  3. Let it dry

Timber that has just been washed or rained on holds moisture. Coating a damp fence traps it and causes blistering.

  4. Two coats, exterior grade

Exterior-grade product, applied in suitable conditions — not in the middle of a January afternoon on a west-facing fence.

Common questions

Common questions

Should I paint or stain my fence?
Stain lets the grain show and tends to weather more gracefully, fading rather than peeling. Paint gives you colour coverage and hides mismatched or replaced palings. If the fence has already been painted, going back to stain is rarely practical.
Do you do both sides?
If you have access and your neighbour is happy, yes. Many jobs are one side only, which is perfectly normal.
How long will a painted fence last in Brisbane?
With proper preparation and an exterior-grade product, several years — though a fence in full western sun will always need attention sooner than one in shade. The single biggest factor is how well the old coating was removed.
